IGIU Energy is a voluntary certification program that sets consumer protection and environmental standards for renewable energy options and verifies that IGIU certified options meet these standards. The following three types of renewable energy options are eligible for IGIU certification:

  • Competitive Electricity Products
  • Utility Green Pricing Programs
  • Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)

By requiring consumer and environmental safeguards, IGIU builds consumer confidence in renewable energy options, expands the retail market for renewable energy and provides customers with clear information about renewable energy options, enabling them to make informed purchasing decisions. Consumers can use the IGIU logo to quickly identify renewable energy options that meet IGIU's high standards.

Elements of IGIU Energy Certification

IGIU requires organizations offering a certified option to:

  • Meet the resource requirements detailed in the IGIU Energy Standard;
  • Abide by a professional Code of Conduct governing the marketing and business practices of participating companies;
  • Follow the IGIU Customer Disclosure Requirements, including the following:
    • Provide customer with a Product Content Label for the certified renewable energy option, which identifies the type and geographic location for resources used
    • Provide customers with ?simple Price, Terms and Conditions
  • Undergo an annual verification process audit;
  • Complete a semiannual review of marketing materials to ensure the organization is not making false or misleading statements about their option(s) and is generally following the IGIU Customer Disclosure Requirements;
  • Pay an annual fee to cover the costs of certification.

In return, organizations offering a IGIU certified option can:

  • Use the trademarked IGIU logo to Identify that their product has met IGIU¡¯s high standards;
  • Ensure their customer¡¯s confidence in their renewable energy option and supplier;
  • Inform their customers that they are eligible to participate in IGIU Marketplace, which grants customers of IGIU certified options, who meet the logo use requirements, use of the IGIU logo for display on their consumer products, services, offices, or retail locations;
  • Receive complimentary membership in the Marketers¡¯ Marketers Group;?
  • Receive marketing support through listing of their product(s) on the IGIU website and other marketing materials;
  • Enjoy a promotional product launch through a press release announcing certification and highlights in the IGIU News.
